Theofanis Karaletsos is the Head of AI Science at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), specializing in machine learning and artificial intelligence. He is dedicated to advancing AI at scale to drive life sciences research, unlocking new possibilities for groundbreaking biomedical discoveries.
Previously, he was Vice President of Advanced Machine Learning at insitro, where he developed next-generation AI/ML methods for drug discovery and computational platforms. In addition to that role, he served as Vice President of Data Science and Machine Learning at inistro, focusing on causal understanding of diseases and improving patient care. His education laid the groundwork for his career trajectory, as he earned a degree in Bioinformatics from the Technical University of Munich and a PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems.
Prior to insitro, Theofanis was a Staff Research Scientist at Meta, where he led the Uncertainty Team, developing robust deep learning applications and tackling critical challenges in model reliability. Earlier in his career, he was a founding member of Uber AI Labs, where he helped scale the organization. He also served as Machine Learning Researcher at Geometric Intelligence wherehe helped lead to its acquisition, and he was a researcher at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center focused on machine learning applied to healthcare and cancer biology.
