Change the way car insurance companies service their clients..
Hellas Direct is Greece’s first direct-to-consumer online car insurance company founded in 2011 by Emilios Markou and Alexis Pantazis. With premiums rising by a third due to a series of company closures, these entrepreneurs saw an opportunity for an innovative, affordable entrant in the Greek car insurance market. With its scientific approach to risk and its user-friendly web interface, the company offers fast and easy quotes; clear choices with transparent pricing; and competitively priced policies for safe drivers. It uses no middlemen, charges no hidden costs, has a 24/7 emergency line and direct claims management, providing superior customer service. As a direct-to-consumer insurer, it listens to potential customers and responds with coverage solutions that address real needs. In 2014, Hellas Direct completed an institutional funding round led by Third Point LLC’s Hellenic Recovery Fund and joined by Endeavor Catalyst, an innovative co-investment vehicle that invests alongside qualified, lead investors in Endeavor Entrepreneurs through a rules-based process.
Emilios and Alexis share corporate and personal backgrounds. They met while working at Goldman Sachs in London in 2005. Emilios graduated from Manchester University with a degree in Computer Science in 1993 and earned a Masters in Actuarial Sciences and Finance, the latter at London Business School. Over the next 18 years he worked at Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, and Barclays, heading its European insurance structuring team. Alexis followed a similar trajectory, studying Economics at Cambridge followed by 12 years at Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, and BCG. In 2005, he completed an MBA at Wharton and then became an Executive Director at Goldman, where he led principal investing and new initiatives in European investment management. Since 2006, Emilios and Alexis have been angel investors and have funded numerous startups in the US and UK, including an investment by Emilios in ZocDoc.com. Both left their jobs in June 2009 to set up Hellas Direct.
